BACKGROUND

Hi Cam commenced business in March 1996 here in Australia, providing low-level aerial photography with a radio-controlled helicopter, and standard photography from full-sized aircraft when regulations require it.

To take an accurate photo from the helicopter requires a live video link, so the shot can be framed up correctly.

We found that "spy shop" equipment was unsuitable unless modified. Some businesses were selling systems for aerial use, but these were bulky and needed 12 volts (10 cells). Generally they supplied CMOS cameras, unless you paid to upgrade to CCD.
So we ended up building our own system and experimenting with different setups. Some of the setups are shown at left.

This experience taught us some valuable lessons about what works, and what doesn't.

It was clear that there was a market for well-designed video transmission systems to suit hobbyists wanting to get real-time views from their model planes or cars.

The decision was made to branch out from aerial photography into the design and manufacture of systems that would be attractive to hobbyists.

 ATTRACTIVE FEATURES

We made some rules for ourselves:

    Use CCD, not CMOS cameras.
    Micro size. Chunky free zone!
4.8V for low weight and compatibility.

We knew that CCD components would cost us more. Also, avoiding the usual large box for the transmitter required designing from the ground up. And our insistence on 4.8 volts made extra work because suitable components are rare.

However, these considerations have paid off. Video transmitter sales now form a major part of the business. Our philosophy is to provide the best possible systems to the wonderful community of enthusiastic modellers around the world.

As for the photography side of the business, it's a great excuse to get out of the office!
